Elmer Bischoff (1916-1991)...Born: Berkeley, CA

Studied: University of California (Berkeley)

Member: San Francisco Art Association.

Elmer Bischoff grew up in Northern California. He graduated from college in the late 1930s and by the early 1940s, was exhibiting in annual watercolor shows at the San Francisco Museum of Art. After World War II, he continued exhibiting watercolors for a few more years then devoted the rest of his art career to painting oils and acrylics on canvas. He was an active participant in the San Francisco Abstract Expressionist group, and then became a major force in the Bay Area Figurative group in the 1950s. Bischoff was an influential art instructor in the San Francisco area. His works are in numerous, major museums including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art and the Museum of Modern Art.
